Deacon John Thompson is the Pastoral Associate for Sacred Heart and Saint Augustine.

He was born in LaGrange Kentucky and at the age of two his parents moved back to Jeffersonville. He grew up on Chestnut Street and went to St. Augustine Grade School. After graduation he attended Mt. St. Francis for one year and graduated from Our Lady of Providence High School.  He married his wife Patti in September of 1963. In March of 1966 he joined the United States Air Force, and severed two tours in Vietnam. After serving four years, Deacon John returned home and returned to work for Winn Dixie Food Stores. He attended Sullivan Business College and received an Associate Degree in Business.

He started working part-time for St. Augustine in 1984 when our pastor Fr. Ed Rippenger hired his wife Patti and him to be Coordinators of Family Ministry.  In June of 1992 Deacon John retired from Winn Dixie after 34 years and was hired full time as the Coordinator of Family Ministry by Fr. Harold Knueven.

His wife and he have four children, Kelli, Erin, Jonathan, and Megan. They have been blessed with three grandchildren, Nathan and Noah, who are twins, and their granddaughter Rebecca.

His hobbies are doing things with his family, watching TV and working. His favorite thing about being Catholic is being able to attend Mass during the week.

His favorite Bible verse is: “Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, it is not pompous, it is not inflated, it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury, and it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.”

Deacon John’s favorite saint would have to be St. Augustine. His life was a struggle until he finally gave his life over to God. Deacon John thinks that is the story of so many people in our world today. That was his story until he made the decision that being a Catholic means more than just saying “I am a Catholic.” But living out your life in a way that people can see, without your saying a word, that you are a Catholic.

Deacon John’s favorite thing about working for Sacred Heart and Saint Augustine, is the people who make up the Catholic Community of Jeffersonville. They are without a doubt some of the nicest and most friendly Catholics he has ever known.  They make his life richer and more faith filled. They make sharing his faith with them easier to do because of the faith they have and are willing to share with him.
