In today’s first reading from the Book of Kings, the Lord appears to Solomon ia dream and said to him, “Ask something of me and I will give it to you.” Is that not something we all would like to have happen to us? What would be the first thing that would come to mind if that happened to you? A new car? A new and bigger home? Win the Lottery? I am sure we could go on and on telling the Lord what we would like to have.
But what was it that Solomon asked of the Lord? WISDOM! What in the world what was he thinking? He could have had anything, and he asked for Wisdom. He asked for the ability to have an understanding heart to judge the people that he was to govern. He asked for the ability to distinguish right from wrong. And for the ability to be able to govern God’s people fairly and justly.
The Lord was so pleased that he said to Solomon, “Because you have asked for this—not for a long life for yourself, not for riches, nor for the life of your enemies, but for understanding so that you may know what is right, I do as you have requested. I give you a heart so wise and understanding that there has never been anyone like you up to now, and after you there will come no one to equal you.”
I would like to think that there are many people in the Catholic Community of Sacred Heart and St. Augustine that would like to ask for the wisdom to be a like Solomon. I feel many parishioners would ask for the wisdom to be able to have an understanding heart so to be able not judge people they know. To be able to accept everyone for where they are in their faith journey. To be able to understand right from wrong and to choose rightly.
God gives to us so many blessings and gift that help us to make it each and every day. I am sure that whatever it is that we would ask of God, he would say to us, “I do give to you what you request because of your faithfulness to me and to those in the Catholic Community of Jeffersonville. You are my good and faithful servants.”
